Mozambique Development in Motion |
The idea of MDiM was born in the Summer of 2007. After spending the past 15 years serving in various capacities with Habitat for Humanity, it was time for me to move on but didn't know what to. After spending time with Marilyn and Barbara, aka 'The Sisters', learning of what they had accomplished in Mozambique the vision of expanding on what they had created began to take shape. Additional reading, consulting, and much prayer led me to believe that God had brought us together for a reason.
Our vision from the beginning has been to take a holistic approach to a single community as opposed to a focus on a particular task, e.g. AIDS elimination. Borrowing from the concepts of the UN Millennium goals we built MDiM to focus on helping in the areas of Education, Health, and Economic Development. The idea is actually quite simple, if people are undereducated they will be unable to develop the skills necessary to develop themselves, without adequate health care they can not become productive, and without economic development they will remain dependent on others for the basics of life. All three legs of this stool must be in place in order for a community to be truly self sufficient. We will initially focus our resources on the Chicuque/Maxixe area in order to take full advantage of the local knowledge and relationships developed by 'The Sisters'. Our goal is to expand to other parts of Mozambique as time and resources permit.
We will provide resources, training, and support. Most important, ALL entities MDiM supports or launches will be owned by Mozambiquans. We will also limit our in country employees as our goal is to help launch self sustaining enterprises, not create an MDiM 'brand'. We have no plans at this time to have US based employees to limit our administrative costs.
Through these concepts it is our hope and prayer that MDiM will help the people of Chicuque and Maxixe develop a self sustaining community in which their education and health levels improve dramatically and employment in locally owned businesses is a real possibility.
These are admittedly lofty goals however God promises that He will supply all of our needs . While the past and current situation in Chicuque and Mozambique overall has been dire to say the least we are hopeful for the future. Each and every one of us can make a difference!
